International Organizations and Their Role in Maintaining Peace and Security: selected challenges

Introduction

International organizations have a role in maintaining security and peace worldwide, especially among member states. After experiencing the agonies and destruction of the two world wars as well as other regional and international conflicts, world leaders met and approved the charters of different international organizations namely the Organization of African Unions (OAU) and the United Nations Organization (UNO) to mention a few, with the role of maintaining international security and peace between member nations and development in their respective regions. However, the United Nations (UN) as well as the OAU (now the African Union) as a major component of international organizations have been faced with several challenges, such as funding, disparities in compensation and logistics, unclear mandates, and divergent approaches to issues like elections and sanctions (Biermann and Koops, 2017).
